Lure

The Venus flytrap opens her lips to release a sickly sweet perfume like a mating call. Not all will love it. But those who do will be lured into her clutches the way a witch charms her victims with unbreakable spells.

Shh, her quarry has arrived.

Check out this post, it is pretty original, and very very funny!

staff:

Y2K might have been made up by the media, but there is another very real limit in computer software: the 32-bit integers that represent most numbers max out at 4,294,967,295. (See this chart for reference)

We never fathomed Tumblr would come close to 4 billion posts, so, unfortunately, our 32-bit Post IDs will probably run out on Sunday.

But we have a plan!

This weekend…

Drabble: "Name"

Aheila’s Drabble Challenge is a weekly feature on Aheila’s blog. The aim: to write a 100-word story (± 5 words) reflecting your personal take on her prompt for that week. After reading Ryan’s masterful efforts, I was inspired! So here’s my take on the prompt “Name”.

——————-

Name

He stood alone, a solitary figure on the bustling platform, untouched by the restless throng around him. She watched him discreetly, like she did every morning. He intrigued her beyond reason.

Suddenly the crowd surged towards the opening doors, pushing her off balance. Strong hands grabbed her shoulders and she found herself staring into a pair of dark, intense eyes. His eyes.

He gently pulled her upright, watching her closely. He didn’t let go.

“T-thanks,” she stammered. He blinked, then briskly turned and walked away.

She stared at the spot where he disappeared into the crowd. She still did not know his name.

Script Frenzy: the madness and the liberation

I have hit a pothole in my writing journey that has left me stranded on the side of the road, waiting for the AA to help me on my way again. In real life, the AA man drives a yellow car with big signs blazoning him to be the answer to many stranded drivers’ prayers. There’s even a toll free 24h number you can dial in case of emergencies. Unfortunately, in the world of writing there are no toll free numbers or clearly marked vehicles coming around the bend to pull you out of your slump. Bummer.

So what to do? Seeing that I’m still new at this writing business and blindly making my way down an uncharted road… I don’t have the faintest idea. Disclaimers aside, if one were to consider the slumps we fall into in everyday life, one solution would be a change of scenery. As the saying goes, “a change is as good as a holiday”.

That is why an article by Betsy Franco caught my eye, where she talks about her own unexpected “road assist” when she took on the challenge to write a script in an unfamiliar genre. It forced her into new creative waters, and matured her as a writer in ways she could never have foreseen.

Suddenly it opened my eyes to the possibility that my AA truck might be coming from an unexpected direction: Script Frenzy. It is similar to NaNoWriMo in that participants have a month (i.e. April) to write a certain number of words (or pages) for a script instead of a novel.

When I participated in NaNo last year, it was an eclectic mix of good and bad experiences – yet the one thing that stood out above all else was the way it influenced my writing, in a very good way.

My NaNo ML, AlyssC01, tried to convince me last year that it is much more relaxed than NaNo, and a great reason for writers to write, which is reason enough to join (she says). At the time we had that discussion – in the middle of NaNo – I was not open to the idea of subjecting myself to another month of torture again. EVER. So I dismissed it immediately and haven’t thought of it since, until earlier this month when she mentioned Script Frenzy on her blog.

Suddenly I find myself wondering if I should try my hand at another mad rush of words during yet another hectic time of my life. And to be honest, now that the winner’s glow has faded, my sleep patterns have returned to normal and the voices in my head have subsided substantially… I am actually considering it.

Maybe I’m a masochist. Or maybe I’m just plain crazy. Either way, don’t tell my husband. He might just do something drastic, like grab my cats and move to Alaska. Or worse, take away my internet and lock my laptop in the basement for the whole month of April.

Photo

Creating Conflict: or, The Joys of Boiling Oil (Holly Lisle Workshop)

Creating Conflict: or, The Joys of Boiling Oil (Holly Lisle Workshop):
Brilliant, straight forward and enlightening, author Holly Lisle illuminates the what, why and how of Conflict with her usual sharpshooter humour and deep understanding of the craft of storytelling.

Photo

Photo

Full scholarships to Holly Lisle's "Think Sideways" & "Revise your Novel" courses

Full scholarships to Holly Lisle's "Think Sideways" & "Revise your Novel" courses

"I like my job, of course, or at least I like it a lot more than most of the other jobs for which I..."

“I like my job, of course, or at least I like it a lot more than most of the other jobs for which I am qualified (roofer, dishwasher, law school student). But I don’t like my job nearly as much as I like wearing the same t-shirt for seven days straight…I’m just kidding. I wouldn’t really do that. I would write all the time, of course. I would move to a little house…with a brokedown porch, and I’d sit on my porch and write…and feel the tension of Southern modernity all around me, which would be reflected brilliantly in my novels, which would sell like hotcakes and get short-listed for awards. I know what you’re wondering. You’re wondering how I can even fantasize about having that kind of writing life when I clearly just sandwiched two “which” clauses into one sentence.

Nope, I’m lying. I can still feel the sun on my face and hear the gentle roar of the ocean in my head, feel the sand on my skin, taste the salt in the air… I am so not ready for the new year! But, as my favourate saying goes, I guess I’ll just suck it up. Who’s with me?

During the holiday I took a break from writing and instead spent as much time as possible reading. The greatest thing that happened to me was discovering Louis L’Amour. Yes, I know I’m a bit late to the party, but I more than made up for it by reading every book I could lay my hands on (I’ve read 6 so far, 3 of them really thick ones. Now that I’m home I will find more).

I also made some New Year resolutions:

First of all, I’ve decided I want to blog more, which indirectly also means writing more. I am aiming at a post once a week, dividing the posts between writing (i.e. this blog) & my paper crafts (CreativeDepths.wordpress.com) which is my other creative pastime. That means a post every second week for each blog.

Which brings me to my other resolution, to merge this blog with my Wordpress blog. As much as I like Tumblr, I absolutely love Wordpress, especially its flexible layout options and fabulous Admin section, which is much better suited to my way of blogging. Essentially nothing will change except the blog address. When the change has happened, I will let you know.

I know it won’t be easy, especially blogging so frequently, so I’ll be making use of The DailyPost to motivate myself to blog regularly. I hope you’ll encourage me with comments and likes, and good will along the way :) .

Happy writing!
